Happy Halloween! | John’s Creek Photographer

Why did it take me, the Photographer, seven years to figure out that I should take pictures of my kids in their costumes before Halloween?! Every year, it’s the same thing … the mad rush home from work/school, get homework done, get dinner cooked, get the hyper children to eat their dinner, throw the dishes in the sink, get the kids in costume, settle the argument over who gets to carry which pumpkin bucket, get out the door … and then, with the bountiful piles of sugar that await them at each house, each doorbell beckoning the desperate children as they anticipate that first sweet bite of candy … at that second of peak anticipation, Mom (the Photographer) says, “Wait! Stand there next to your brother. Now pose like Darth Vader. No, not like that, like this …”

And every year, my children, bless their little hearts, put up with me. My husband, too. And I know I must drive all four of them crazy.

So, this year, a revelation! Why don’t I take the pictures before Halloween? Ok, I know it’s not a revolutionary idea. A million other moms smarter than me figured it out long ago. It just truly had never occurred to me. So today in the Holden household, it was The Day Before Halloween, a holiday in and of itself! I took the afternoon 100% off work, and we carved our pumpkin, roasted some seeds, and then played outside in our costumes (Mommy dressed up as the Photographer) and voila! Pictures are done! Mommy is not stressed! Children are not delayed of their gratification! Husband is not annoyed! It is a beautiful thing!

Another great thing about this Halloween was the costume budget. My oldest son and I have been reading the Chronicles of Narnia together. We read one chapter each night, and we’ve finished 5 of the 7 books. So choosing a Knight for his costume was a pretty easy sell. It took a little longer to convince my younger son, but he finally gave in. Why does that make me happy? Because we already had the costumes! They were Christmas gifts for my boys who love role playing games. And for my daughter, I found the Ladybug costume at a bargain months ago, about $15. She was fine with it until her obsession with Princesses kicked in about 4 weeks ago. So she started insisting that she was going to be a princess for Halloween. Well, lucky for us, she is two and therefor gullible. We simply said, “Oh look, sweetheart, you can be a Ladybug Princess!” She fell for it. But she did proclaim that even Ladybug Princesses must carry a shield and sword like their older brothers, the Knights, do. Thank goodness the boys were willing to share their props.

And while I’m on the subject, I hope you will take a minute to visit the blog of my dear friend and fellow photographer, Paula Swift. Paula and her husband were just interviewed by their local news station to discuss what Halloween means to a family with food allergies. Their son has a severe peanut allergy. Trick or Treating can be a very scary thing for parents like Paula and Chris, not knowing if the next house will drop a Snickers in their son’s bucket. Food allergies are becoming more and more common in our world. Please consider having some “safe” goodies to give out to allergic kids who might ring your bell, like pencils, stickers, yo-yos, or even peanut and dairy free candy like Twizzlers, lollipops, or jellybeans.

Have a very fun and safe Halloween!

Is there an ornithologist in the house? | Buckhead Photography

Anyone know anything about birds?

This splendid creature has been hanging out at my favorite park the last couple of weeks. I’ve seen him several times, and I finally caught a photograph of him on Sunday evening. He’s probably two to three feet tall when he lands, and he’s very calm and serene.

I know very little about our feathered friends except for the blue jays and chickadees in my backyard. What kind of bird is he? Anyone know?

New sneak peeks on the blog tomorrow, hopefully! I’m editing like a mad woman, in between sessions this week. I’ve got twice my normal session load for the past three weeks, so my To Do list is longer than ever. But I’m getting through it all bit by bit! I’ve got three session presentations going live tomorrow, so keep an eye on your email boxes if you are waiting!

Don’t forget! The holiday order deadling is November 14. Just a few more weeks!

The Photographer’s Child

I often have a client say, “You must have so many photos of your kids all over your house!” Well, yes, I do. But probably not as many as one might think, considering my kids are so over me and my camera. They usually roll their eyes when they see my lens cap come off.

I thought I’d share a representative sample of the kinds of images I get when I actually ask my kids to pose for me. Tonight, the big brown truck showed up with a new light set-up (a Westcott Spiderlite TD5, for the photographers who might be interested). That seemed like the perfect excuse to let my boys stay up a little later to pose play.

Luckily, they were fascinated with this gigantic light in my living room, so I actually got an ounce or two of cooperation without major bribery. I actually got a few portraits I love! But I still got a few goofy faces. That’s a photographer’s child for you!

Two Years Old | Toddler Photography

I was sitting here at this same desk two years and two days ago, in this same chair, looking at a client’s session images on my computer screen. Another contraction, after weeks and weeks of them, barely caught my attention. When another came stronger just a couple minutes later, I suggested to my husband that we take the boys for a walk, hoping this might actually be real labor and maybe we could help it progress.

They rode in the double stroller as my husband pushed them along on the street, and I waddled along side, rubbing my aching enormous belly every few steps. One of our neighbors waved from his front porch with a smile. “You’re gonna need a bigger boat!” he called out with a snicker. An hour later, we were at the hospital. A few hours after that, our daughter let out her first cry.

And now, here I sit, looking again at my computer screen, at images of my daughter this afternoon, at her smile, her curls, her sapphire blue eyes, her long dark lashes, her pink painted toenails … how these years have gone by in a blink!

She just toddled in with strawberry scented hair wet from her bath, with yellow footy pj’s with a princess on the front, with those gigantic eyes sparkling at me. She squeezed my neck and kissed my cheek and said, “Nigh’nigh’ Mommy! I Yuv You!” In a blink, my baby girl is two.

These are not her official Two Year Portraits. I’ll get to those in a few weeks. Today just offered that irresistible combination of beautiful outdoor light, a playful, joyful toddler mood, and an afternoon without commitments. When I asked her if she’d like me to take some pictures of her, she giggled and said, “Yeah! Pictures! Erica pictures!” So how could I ever pass up that opportunity?

Let me say, we are going to have our hands full with this one. The supermodel posing is already an instinct for her. Oh boy!

As we headed inside from our portrait mini-session, Erica and her daddy passed through this amazing pool of light in our driveway. I had to make them stop for more photographs. I’m exhilarated when I find light like this, sparkling backlight with just the right reflection to illuminate the faces. Love it!!!!
