My Beach Boys | Atlanta Children’s Photographer

I promised to share these in my post a while back and I’m just now getting to them. Boy, this summer has been busy!!

Most photographers will tell you that their children suffer from PCS. Photographer’s Child Syndrome. I have clients often say, “You must have so many photographs of your children in your home!” Well, I do, but they aren’t always created with a willing subject. My kids are generally unimpressed with me and my camera. They roll their eyes when they see me popping a new memory card in the camera and pulling clothes out of their closet. They are sweethearts though, and they usually indulge my portrait craving anyway. And I must admit to an occasional bribe.

My middle son, Stephen, turned 6 this summer. During our vacation in the Outer Banks, I casually suggested to him that we do some of his birthday portraits on the beach. He actually agreed! He asked if he could wear his orange football shirt, and though it is a bit too big and certainly a violation of all my normal portrait clothing suggestions, I agreed. Hey, at least it highlighted his hair well! I was just so happy that he was willing to pose for me that letting him choose the clothes seemed like a worthy compromise. So I grabbed my camera and we scurried down to the beach before his mood changed.

After we’d wrapped up our mini-shoot, I ran into my husband and my oldest son on the dune walk on our way back inside. Chris told me that Matthew was feeling left out and wanted me to take some pictures of him, too. I looked at Matthew, who had changed his clothes and washed his face. He said, “I picked out a solid blue shirt, Mommy. That will be good for pictures, right?” Oh, how my heart melted! Chris smiled at me in a way that silently let me know this was all Matthew’s idea. How I love that child! So Stephen headed back to the house with his daddy, and Matthew came with me for his own portrait session.

Photographer’s Child Syndrome is cured! At least for a while. :)

The Outer Banks | Portraits on the Beach

Every year, my family and I spend time on the incredible beaches of the Outer Banks, North Carolina. My family is spread all over the country, and this annual beach vacation is our time to come together. My cousin and his family in particular, live in Washington, DC. His young children are my kids’ 2nd cousins, and it means so much to both of us that they grow up with a close relationship. Family means everything to us.

We have come to love this area so much. We stay on the northern end of the islands (usually near Duck or Corolla for those of you who are familiar with OBX). There is a peaceful, unhurried pace in OBX, and the crowds stay away. On a given day, we can spend hours on the beach and only see a handful of other families. Sometimes we see none at all. It’s quiet, private, and beautiful. A person can breathe here. A person can rediscover part of their soul here. A person can experience God here.

This year, I was determined to just enjoy my vacation, so I gave myself permission to take a break from the photography a bit. I carried along my new point and shoot camera (a post on that baby is coming soon!) and left the pro camera in the house much of the time. But as you know, photography is not just my career but my passion, so I couldn’t resist some shots here and there. The setting is just too lovely to resist. And as usual, once I did break out the camera, I made more photographs than I know what to do with! :)

These are the “fun” shots. I’ll share the portraits of my children on the beach in another post. Of course, I made portraits!

My three … how I love them so! Fine Art Portraiture
This might be one of my all time favorite images of my daughter. Those amazing lashes, her sunkissed skin, that delightfully crooked eyebrow, her salty, windblown hair. I look at this photograph and I can imagine God’s loving hands shaping every perfect detail as he created her. I know I am biased, but she takes my breath away! Sandy kid toes are the best, aren’t they? Family Portraits

Our family portrait to remember the vacation. No coordinated clothes, no fixed hair or makeup, no stiff bodies, no photoshopping. Just our family … happy, blessed, real. I love this shot.

Happy Daddy’s Day

I hope all the dads out there, and their families, have had a wonderful day today! My family has spent the day unpacking, sleeping, catching up on laundry. We got home from the beach very late last night, and while I wish we had planned a more exciting day for my hubby, we are all exhausted. Thankfully he’s an awesome, unselfish, and understanding guy.

Here are a few more images from our vacation last week, of the best dad I know. I love you, honey!

While almost any man can be a father, it takes an incredibly special man to be a Daddy.
