Welcome, Precious Boy | Atlanta Newborn Photographer

He is here! Blog readers met these beautiful expectant parents recently. Their son has arrived at last! He is quite tiny and had to spend a few days in NICU. Happily, his stay was short, and he is home in their arms now. He was 13 days old when I met him. He wasn’t too happy with us for all the wardrobe changes and moving him around. But once I pulled one or two of my newborn tricks out of the bag, he settled right in.

The beautiful blue blanket you see was handmade for him by his great grandmother. I’m hoping she will make one I can buy from her sometime! It was so soft, and the texture and color were perfect!

It is such an honor to be entrusted with family’s newborn portraits. My sense of awe gets stronger every time I see and hold one of these amazing babies, especially as my own kids get bigger by the day. The newness, the tinyness, the wonderful perfection of each infant takes my breath away.

Thank you, Mandy and Brett, for inviting me to play a tiny part in this special time in your life. It has truly been a pleasure. Congratulations!

Rain | Johns Creek Photographer

I’ve been trying to carve out a few minutes to share these. About a week and a half ago, I took the kids out to play in the rain. My daughter loves her rain boots! She would wear them every day if I let her. She begged me to let her wear them to school today. So on that rainy afternoon, I wanted to capture a few photographs of her in her boots, splashing with joy as only a two year old can. Atlanta doesn’t get enough rainy days anymore in this drought, so I didn’t want to miss my chance before she outgrew her beloved boots. Naturally, her big brothers wanted to come along to play.

It was lightly drizzling when we first went out. Then the rain stopped, and the heat within the pavement created a magical mist that rose from the street. I loved the misty feeling of the images, the gentle reflection from the water vapor to spread the light and soften the shadows. And of course, those curls did their lovely curly-curl thing in all that humid air!

PS … Your prayers are appreciated. We started potty training this week! Oh my!

Double Take

Their mom warned me. These two were mobile and fast! :) But I didn’t mind a bit. It was so fun to see them again, to see how much they’d grown since our last session. Yes, we did a lot of running, and it was a real challenge to get a shot of the two of them together, but I thoroughly enjoyed our morning together nonetheless. The only real frustration of the session was all the vicious mosquitoes! They would not leave these poor boys alone, and I felt so bad that they got some bites. I hope they weren’t itchy too long!

So the advice I’ll be adding to my client tips … bring bug spray! I cannot take the liability of putting it on your kids myself. You must be the judge of whether the bug or the bug repellant is the lesser evil. But by all means, if we will be shooting outdoors, feel free to bring some to protect your kids. I am sorry that I didn’t think to warn these little guys’ mom when we’d talked. But then again, I’ve never seen the mosquitoes love two kids as much as these … even at this same shooting location. I guess these boys are just sweeter than most.

Hugs, T & C. Don’t grow up too fast, okay?

Photographing a Photographer | Roswell Family Portraits

When you were a kid about to appear in your first school play, your mom or your teacher probably told you, “Don’t worry if you mess up. No one will know but you.” Well, it’s not that I’m all that worried about messing up during a session. I know my camera, I know my techniques, and very little rattles me. But photographing a photographer … that can inspire just a little anxiety! I better be on my game, because he WILL know if I forget my lines during the school play!

Lucky for me, this particular family are so incredibly nice and fun to work with. And it is also very flattering to be chosen by another photographer for his family portraits. It’s a vote of confidence from one of my peers, a pat on the back that means so much. It is an honor.

It was also fun to talk a little shop with Rick, the talented photographer/dad of the family. I can actually see my husband’s eyes glaze over when I say things like “f-stop” and “shutter speed”, so I try not to pester him with too much photo talk on a daily basis. I love it when I can chat with a fellow shutterbug.

And with Rick and Pamela having kids as gorgeous as these for me to photograph, it’s a bonus!

Thank you, H family, for choosing me as your photographer. It was truly an honor and a pleasure. I loved seeing you all!

During the session, we took a few minutes to create some headshots for Rick.
