Eight Years Old {Johns Creek Children’s Photographer}

My first baby just turned eight years old. Before long, he’ll be 18. Each year seems to go faster than the last.

I’ve been bouncing around ideas and plans for his Eight Year Portraits in my head for weeks. I’ve changed the location at least four times. I’ve bought and returned a few outfits, even shoes. I strategically timed his recent haircut. I’ve watched the weather forecast and marked appointed times on my calendar. And still, something just wasn’t clicking for me. I was thinking like a photographer, not like a mom. And goodness knows, I have no shortage of portraits of my kids. I wanted these to be different.

I realized that I didn’t want these to be planned portraits. I didn’t want new clothes, perfect hair, or a carefully chosen setting … though all of those things are just wonderful for a portrait. I wanted these images to be all about Matthew. I wanted to tell the story of who Matthew is at eight years old. His joys, his home, his heart.

Thus, I have three sessions in mind, each to capture images for an album all about Matthew at age 8. Today was the first, in his room, wearing his favorite jeans and t-shirt, with bare feet, of course! I asked him what two things in his room he loved the most, and he answered his bear, Ojo, and his Star Wars book. He’s a bookworm.

This first image is my favorite and it brings tears to my eyes. It is the first photograph I captured today, before Matthew even realized I had camera in hand. I love that he is still young enough to love his teddy bear. He had just jumped on the bed, and grabbed Ojo for a quick hug. A single moment in his year of being eight, totally unposed, totally unplanned. Totally Matthew. Oh, how I love this child!

Did I mention that I got a new camera?

Last week, in fact. But I’ve hardly had any time to play with it since then! Just tonight, I finally had about an hour to spare, so I threw my daughter’s ultra chic red coat on her and carted her outside.

What’s the new camera? The Canon 5D Mark II. Without a doubt, the most amazing camera I have ever held in my hands. I am blown away by what this cookie can do. For the photographers who know what the heck I am talking about …. it will shoot clean and beautifully at 6400 iso! It will even go as high as 25,600 iso! Can you stand it?! The tones, color and detail from this camera are just stunning.

I will be doing lots of playing and learning in the next couple of weeks, as I start shooting full time with this baby beginning with my January sessions (or sooner, if I feel comfortable enough with it). So you might see a few more personal shots on the blog!

Autumn | Atlanta Children’s Photographer

I will soon have a new canvas over my fireplace, and thought I’d share. The Fall color is just starting to emerge in Atlanta. With our drought, we probably won’t have the vibrance we see some years, but a few spots around town are getting very colorful.

Yesterday, I created my own children’s holiday portraits. I’m not sharing many here because they will be on my holiday card, and I don’t want to spoil the surprise. :) But this one I just had to share. This will be a 24×30 Gallery Wrapped Canvas sitting on my mantel very soon. I’ve had a large canvas there for about a year, an image of my kids on the beach. I love the shot so much, but the light blue colors of the sky and the sea just don’t work well in my living room. The rich jewel tones of autumn are a much better match for the decor. I can’t wait to see the new canvas there. Merry Christmas to me!

My New Assistant

What a fantastic day! I admit, I’m just about completely exhausted. I’ve been on my feet, camera in hand, for a total of about 8 hours today. But that’s why I consider my job such an incredible blessing … here I am at 9:30 p.m., almost empty of all energy, yet with a smile on my face. My job is such a blessing to me. The families I work with, the new folks I meet at each session, the old friends I get to see again, and the gift of viewing life through a lens as I do. I thank God constantly for entrusting me with this gift.

So my day started with a session with two young sisters and their parents, repeat clients whom I love dearly. It was a joy to see them again. Then a quick trip home to pack up the kids for the in-laws’ house, and off to my next session.

The P Family had planned a FARMtastic birthday party for their twin girls, now two years old. And lucky for me, they invited me to share in their afternoon, to capture it all as a Life Moments session. With a lot of gear to carry, I asked my dear husband if he would come along to help. He happily agreed. And his help made the whole afternoon go so smoothly for me. I couldn’t have done it without him!

I just wanted to take a second to say a public Thank You to the best husband I could ever have. He has supported me every single step of the way as my business has grown over the years, and always with a smile and a hug and a pat on the back just when I needed it. Today was no exception. I love you, honey!

So, here’s a quick shot of my new favorite assistant. (Now, I wonder how soon he’ll be asking for a raise?)

PS – Tiffany and Bryan, thank you for sharing your daughters’ special day with me, and thank you for your business and friendship. I’ll have sneak peeks on the blog for you soon! And Farmer Sue of The Art Barn, you throw a truly FARMtastic party! It was a glorious day!
