No time like the present | Alpharetta Children’s Photographer

It has rained in Atlanta for the past 5 days. It is forecast to rain for the next 10 days. I think I saw the animals lining up two by two on my drive this morning.

After three sessions rained out this week, including today’s, I had not really planned to pick up my camera this afternoon. My boys were playing Wii, and my daughter was dressing up her dolls, and I was doing some editing when out my office window I saw a glimmer of …. could it be?? …. SUN!

My daughter just had her third birthday two weeks ago. Earlier today, I was trying to determine just when I might shoot her 3 Year Portraits. My session schedule is crazy busy for the next 6 weeks (‘Tis the season!) and the rain is making it even crazier. I thought I might just have to put off my daughter’s portraits until November. But when that long lost sun peaked through the trees and clouds today, I decided to make the most of it. These probably won’t be her only portraits for this year. For one thing, I hadn’t really planned on the post-school pigtails for her official photographs, but it is look that I will always remember from this age. (She calls them “Erica Tails”.)

Sometimes just capturing your child as they are in the moment is what really matters anyway.

So here is my little girl, all three years of her. Her giggles, her curls, her giant blue eyes, her suck-her-thumb-and-twirl-her-hair habit, her crooked eyebrow that I call God’s Thumbprint, her silly self, her gentle self, her magical, bright spirit. She adds such color and light to my world. She is one of a kind. She is fearfully and wonderfully made. She is Erica.

Short and Sweet

Oh my! It has been ages since I updated the blog! Well, here is where I’ve been …

A couple of weeks ago, I was struck with a very sudden, unexpected (and might I add … unwelcome) case of vertigo. I went to bed feeling fine, and woke up at 3 a.m. feeling as though someone had put the Earth’s rotational spin on high speed. I stood up out of bed and in a split second, I hit the floor as gravity seemed to turn upside down. I’ve never experienced this before and assumed it would be gone within a day or two. Long story short, it wasn’t. Yesterday, I saw a second doctor about it, and then received some therapy to hopefully turn this thing around, no pun intended. It’s thankfully nothing serious. Just a simple, classic case of BPPV, or positional vertigo. But it is overwhelming and needless to say, I have not been able to do much work.

Thank you so much to my clients scheduled in these past two weeks, who have been so incredibly understanding and patient as I had to postpone work for a bit. I am very, very hopeful that yesterday’s therapy is going to do the trick and I’ll be back to wearing my photographer hat very soon.

Sorry that I have neglected the blog as well. I’ll share some new images soon!!

For now, here are a couple of my daughter caught in a rare moment of deep sleep. I only got a few, but I love them dearly. She usually wakes up upon hearing my shutter click, so I was so happy to capture these of her in dreamland.

PS – You’ll notice these images are edited with a vintage finish. This is something I plan to do a lot more often this year for my clients. If you love the finish, be sure to let me know and we’ll strive to capture well-suited images during your session!

Just a few more …

I’m sure blog readers remember the fantastic birthday party I recently covered for two precious young ladies. We had such a blast that day. But one thing proved to be quite a challenge … keeping two 2 Year Olds in one place at one time …  in the middle of a party … on a farm! “Yeah, no thanks, crazy photographer lady!” Their mom and I agreed that we wanted to capture “just a few more” outside the hussle and bussle of the party, where we could focus on just them and their sisterhood.

So, their mom and dad brought them over to my house on a wonderful Fall afternoon, and we caught just a few more. I couldn’t resist sharing not only the images, but the email exchange from yesterday …

First, Tiffany replied to my email with a word I won’t share here on the blog, expressing her (good) frustration at having more images she loved to choose from. Heehee. Then she asked me my favorite image for a canvas. She said, “My birthday is Saturday and I think I just found what I want for my present.” I suggested the one of the twins hugging, because it was just such a sweet momento of their relationship as best friends. Tiffany then emailed me: “Well, I just love being first to have a brilliant idea. I told my husband, and he and the girls sang happy birthday to me over the Shannon Holden website.”

That mental picture just cracked me up.

Happy Birthday, Tiffany!

The Photographer’s Other Child

Another title to this post might be, “How NOT to bribe your two year old.”

My daughter has been home sick all week, so I have to cut her a little slack. But she’s feeling better today, and naturally I wanted to play with my new light some more, so I tried to talk her into posing for a few minutes. She was less than somewhat interested. So then I thought, “Hmmm. She’s two now. Maybe she will work for treats!” I offered her a lollipop IF she would sit still for a second. What was I thinking? Clearly, you don’t even say the word lollipop to a two year old unless you are seconds away from unwrapping it and handing it to her. Stupid mommy.

So, in case you could not figure it out on your own … pink dress = before lollipop. Blue shirt = after lollipop. I’ll remember that next time.
