A personal photography project: to create one new photograph every day of 2008. (It’s Leap Year!)

Autumn | Atlanta Children’s Photographer

I will soon have a new canvas over my fireplace, and thought I’d share. The Fall color is just starting to emerge in Atlanta. With our drought, we probably won’t have the vibrance we see some years, but a few spots around town are getting very colorful.

Yesterday, I created my own children’s holiday portraits. I’m not sharing many here because they will be on my holiday card, and I don’t want to spoil the surprise. :) But this one I just had to share. This will be a 24×30 Gallery Wrapped Canvas sitting on my mantel very soon. I’ve had a large canvas there for about a year, an image of my kids on the beach. I love the shot so much, but the light blue colors of the sky and the sea just don’t work well in my living room. The rich jewel tones of autumn are a much better match for the decor. I can’t wait to see the new canvas there. Merry Christmas to me!

Two Years Old | Toddler Photography

I was sitting here at this same desk two years and two days ago, in this same chair, looking at a client’s session images on my computer screen. Another contraction, after weeks and weeks of them, barely caught my attention. When another came stronger just a couple minutes later, I suggested to my husband that we take the boys for a walk, hoping this might actually be real labor and maybe we could help it progress.

They rode in the double stroller as my husband pushed them along on the street, and I waddled along side, rubbing my aching enormous belly every few steps. One of our neighbors waved from his front porch with a smile. “You’re gonna need a bigger boat!” he called out with a snicker. An hour later, we were at the hospital. A few hours after that, our daughter let out her first cry.

And now, here I sit, looking again at my computer screen, at images of my daughter this afternoon, at her smile, her curls, her sapphire blue eyes, her long dark lashes, her pink painted toenails … how these years have gone by in a blink!

She just toddled in with strawberry scented hair wet from her bath, with yellow footy pj’s with a princess on the front, with those gigantic eyes sparkling at me. She squeezed my neck and kissed my cheek and said, “Nigh’nigh’ Mommy! I Yuv You!” In a blink, my baby girl is two.

These are not her official Two Year Portraits. I’ll get to those in a few weeks. Today just offered that irresistible combination of beautiful outdoor light, a playful, joyful toddler mood, and an afternoon without commitments. When I asked her if she’d like me to take some pictures of her, she giggled and said, “Yeah! Pictures! Erica pictures!” So how could I ever pass up that opportunity?

Let me say, we are going to have our hands full with this one. The supermodel posing is already an instinct for her. Oh boy!

As we headed inside from our portrait mini-session, Erica and her daddy passed through this amazing pool of light in our driveway. I had to make them stop for more photographs. I’m exhilarated when I find light like this, sparkling backlight with just the right reflection to illuminate the faces. Love it!!!!

The Masterpiece

This past Saturday, I had a 7:30 a.m. session scheduled in Sugar Hill, about 30 minutes north of where I live in Alpharetta. So I hit the road at 7:00, just before dawn. This was the view on my drive. Chris Tomlin was on the radio, singing “How Great is our God!” I simply had to pull over into the Target parking lot to take this photograph. I could not let that moment slip past me.

The song and the image say so much more than I ever could. I am just thankful to have the opportunity to experience this masterpiece first hand. God is such a brilliant artist!

Happily Ever After

First, an important note: I do not photograph weddings! Thank you for the inquiries I get so often. I am flattered that anyone would consider me with the important job of capturing their special day. But portraits are my calling, at least for now. (But I never say never!)

But when someone I love is getting married … you can bet I’ve got my camera handy! (And I have family members breathing down my neck for these shots, so I thought I better hurry and post them here before I start getting nasty notes! LOL!)

The beautiful bride is my second cousin, Kristie and her beloved, Jeff. The ceremony and reception took place this past weekend at the Piedmont Room, overlooking Piedmont Park and downtown Atlanta. The late afternoon light was splendidly soft and golden. The ceremony was so beautiful. And who is that handsome little guy in a tux, with the awesome responsibility of ring bearer? My son, I am proud to say! :) (A quick side note: he fell HEAD.OVER.HEELS. for the young flower girl. He cried when she had to return home to Illinois!)

After the ceremony, the guests waited in the lobby while the wedding party had their formal photographs. Outside, one at Georgia’s lovely late evening thunder showers began to brew. The wind bent the trees, the thunder rattled the windows and the lightning knocked out the power! We waited, and waited, and waited. The guests returned to the dining room. And waited. It was 95 degrees in Atlanta that day, and we had no a/c in the building. It became quite warm quite quickly. My heart was sad for Kristie and Jeff, for a power outage to spoil their wonderful day. But they didn’t let it.

Somehow the restaurant got the food cooked, which was all delicious. And the DJ truly saved the day. He arranged a circle of cars in the parking lot (the storm had passed over by now, and it was dark and cool outside) with headlights blazing. He connected his computer to a car stereo. And then he invited us all outside for the couple’s first dance … in the parking lot! It was a hoot! Jeff and Kristie glided gracefully and blissfully through the rest of their evening, with smiles and love and laughter and candlelight.

Chris and I felt like we were spying on our son during his first date.

Kristie’s dance with her father

A little bit of background … the journey to this day was a long and difficult one for Kristie and Jeff. Less than a couple of years ago, Kristie went to the ER with chest pains. Tests and scans revealed a large mass in her chest, pressing on her lungs. That mass turned out to be non-hodgekins lymphoma. Only in her twenties at the time, the next year brought intense treatments and side effects, radiation and chemo. Jeff and Kristie had been dating long distance at the beginning of this journey. Jeff relocated to Atlanta to be by Kristie’s side through her treatments, and along the way he proposed. Their love only grew stronger.

Just a few months ago, we all got the glorious news we’d prayed for … Kristie is in remission! And now, hand in hand with the man of her dreams, she faces the future with bright optimism. So would they let a silly thing like a blackout darken their wedding day? Never! Life throws us curve balls. Jeff and Kristie know just how to hit them!!

Jeff and Kristie, may you live happily ever after! Thank you for sharing your special day with us.
