“I’ve been around cameras as long as I can remember. Growing up as the daughter of a professional cinematographer, I can remember my dad teaching me to notice and appreciate the way light can fall on a subject and illuminate something beautiful and magical. I remember childhood days in his darkroom, learning the principles of photography hands-on with an old Minolta SLR, black and white film, and my father’s artistic influence. In school, I took my first formal photography classes and flirted with the idea of being a professional photographer “one day.” But post-college life led me and my career in other directions.
In 2001, I gave birth to our first child. The birth of a child awakens so many things in us. In me, among a long list of other things, it reawakened my love of photography. While my early photographic interest was primarily nature and landscapes, now I discovered the inspiring passion of photographing people. Every time I looked at my son, I saw life! I saw light, beauty, possibilities. I became obsessed with capturing every moment possible. In my son’s first year, I took over 5000 photographs of him! In the coming years, I continued to expand my knowledge and art of photography, pushing myself to grow creatively. And of course, I continued to obsess over my children.
In 2003, when I was seven months pregnant with our second son, I lost my mother – my best friend – to breast cancer. I was naturally devastated by her death, but I was also changed by it in life-affirming ways. I realized just how short life is, how quickly it passes, and how much our relationships matter in the end. My mother’s favorite expression was Live, Love, Laugh. She lived her life by it. In the months after her death, the peace and clarity my heart found were through those words. That was my mother’s legacy to me, and I knew that gift was one I was meant to share with other families through my photographs.
My style of photography is, at its essence, natural. I hope your portraits will hang on your wall or be cherished in a scrapbook for a lifetime or longer. I want them to preserve your memories in a genuine and loving way. I strive to capture my subject’s unique personality rather than force an artificial pose. I work with limited props, simple and subtle backgrounds, and, whenever possible, by natural light.
I am first and foremost a mother to my three children and a wife to an incredible husband. They must always remain at the top of my priority list. As a personal promise to them, I am very careful not to overbook my schedule. It is also a promise to my clients, because it’s the best way that I can offer my clients the kind of personal service I believe in.
Thank you for your interest in my art. I would love to talk with you personally.
